Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) is the largest lake in Italy. This entire area is a popular vacation spot for tourists from neighboring colder European countries but for the most part seems to be off the American traveler's radar. And that's a pity. Every tiny town along the lake's shores offers small hotels, B&Bs, ristorantes, osterias, outdoor markets, neighborhood grocery stores, bakeries, and tourist shops. Often you can walk from one small village to the next on a path along the lake shore. As is typical for Italy, some shops and restaurants will be closed in the middle of the day. That should give you the opportunity to stop, sit on a bench, and marvel at the beautiful lake and its crystal-clear waters.
