One of the nicest markets in Patzcuaro is the Casa de los Once Patios (Eleven Patios), housed in a converted nunnery. The cloistered sisters needed air and outdoor time, hence the eleven beautiful gardens and patios, shielded with high walls from the outside world. Most of the rooms have been converted into shops, but the bathing room is still intact. A windowless dark room with a faucet over a deep tiled tub inspires one to wonder if the nuns bathed by candlelight. It's easy to get lost wandering the many halls that open here and there onto a patio. The shops carry the varied handicrafts from all the little villages around Patzcuaro Lake, copper jewelry, hats, leather goods, lacquer work, pottery, and embroidered clothing. It's well worth an afternoon.
