Wandering the grounds of Maria and Luis' 17th century farmhouse in Melgaço is a history lesson in itself. Not only is there a collection of ancient farm machinery, these stone balls were once used as defensive weapons in Portugal's battles against Spain. Soldiers would take them to the top of the tower (which you can still climb up for amazing views) and drop them on the heads of any enemy soldiers who came too close for comfort.
The rooms in the farmhouse have been tastefully restored, too, retaining as much of the original character and features as possible. A great place to stay!
