Puerto Ricans don’t need an excuse to throw a party or celebrate a holiday. Along with their own festivals, they have adopted several of the States and many from international traditions as well. Naturally, Oktoberfest would be one. We traveled to the center of the island to experience Oktoberfest at Casa Bavaria (a restaurant opened by two Germans), in the mountainous town of Morovis. Although it seemed an adapted event (Latino music and few German beer selections), it was certainly an experience that shouldn’t be missed. And it’s hard to miss it actually; the first three weekends in October are devoted to this event. We escaped the crowds by finding a table in the upstairs restaurant, which they thankfully kept open and running during the festival. This meant a larger menu, a breezy atmosphere, and a beautiful view from the mountaintop perch. We ordered their version of Biergoulash and spatzle, and we weren’t disappointed. The flavors were delicious. If you’re in central Puerto Rico in October, try to make it to this event. If you’re in western Puerto Rico, Rincon holds an annual Oktoberfest with better beer, better food, and German music, usually the first weekend in October. Attend both to get dual experiences of this island’s adaptation of the German tradition!

I feel as though everywhere I’ve gone in Puerto Rico, there’s a postcard view of a beautiful landscape. Morovis is no exception. The small central town boasts roadside waterfalls, twisting journeys into cooler temperatures, and cloud-coated mountain tops from all angles. This shot was taken at Casa Bavaria, a German restaurant, that overlooks the valleys of Morovis. The sun dances on top of these lush meadows and the clouds cast shadows for a dramatic portrait. You shouldn’t leave Puerto Rico without traveling to the center of the island. Experience something totally different from the coast, the cities, and the rainforests.
