Carriage Roads
John D. Rockefeller Jr. built 72 kilometers (45 miles) of crushed-stone carriage roads between 1913 and 1940. Today, these carriage roads—which are almost 5 meters (16 feet) wide—are still in use, with visitors having the option of hiking, biking or taking a horse-and-carriage ride. The carriage roads take in the beauty of the park as they pass woodland, lakes and ponds and also offer views of the Atlantic.
