Caroni Swamp Bird Sanctuary, Caroni, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

About a 20-minute drive from bustling Port-of-Spain, the Caroni Bird Sanctuary is pure nature, a mangrove-rich zone of waterways and lakes where the scarlet ibis, Trinidad’s flamingo-like national bird, makes its home. On glass-bottom-boat tours, knowledgeable guides will point out everything from hairy crabs to caimans gliding through the water. Egrets, herons and nearly 200 other bird species can also be spotted within the diverse Caroni Swamp reserve.
