Despite how peaceful this front porch may look, its history is rooted in the chaos of the Civil War. Confederate soldiers swept through the McGavock Family's fields in their attempt to overtake the Union in the Battle of Franklin, said to be the bloodiest five hours of the Civil War. Blood stains are still visible on the interior floor boards of this house which was converted into a field hospital where the McGavock Family personally helped doctors tend to hundreds of wounded and dying soldiers.
Historian Rob Cross is the most thorough tour guide whose story-telling paints a picture as close to a reenactment as you can get. In addition to this visualization of the battleground, he elicits compassion and admiration for the selfless way the McGavock family faced the sheer horror of their lives being turned upside down.
Get there a bit early and spend some time relaxing on the porch before the tour and then return to the same spot, soak up all the history you just learned and take in the view with a completely different perspective.
