Everyone goes to Carcassonne to visit the Cité Médiévale, and you shouldn't miss it, but when it starts to feel too touristy or a tad too contrived, head back to the "lower city" where the actual residents of Carcassonne live. There are some nice attractions here, the best of which may be the tower at Église Saint-Vincent. Scale 234 spiraling steps to find the best panorama in the city. You get a sweeping vista in all directions and off in the distance sits the majestic Cité Médiévale. Most places charge an entrance fee to ascend their towers but not Saint-Vincent. It was a welcome surprise and a fitting end to a nice day trip.
