More compelling, I thought, were the remains of a synagogue from the early Byzantine era, with its elegant columns and the sun blazing off the limestone blocks. Jesus made Capernaum his base for three years, and recruited many of his disciples from the town’s fishing community. It’s a holy site, and especially if you’re not traveling in a group, don’t expect to get in wearing shorts.
