I moved to Newfoundland in the fall and couldn’t help but be excited for spring to arrive so I could witness the giant icebergs that floated along the coast during that time of year. Spring arrived and I received a phone call from a friend who had heard there were several icebergs off the coast of Cape Spear. She picked me up and we made the half hour drive to that location and there they were – three large and majestic icebergs sitting in the bay. As I sat in awe and watched them slowly float across the bay, something extraordinary happened, something that not many people get to see in their lifetime. One of the icebergs flipped over and broke and half, causing a mini tidal wave to form and leaving debris for about a mile around the site. The loud banging and crashing that came from the impact was almost deafening. That iceberg split into two large pieces and a bunch of small little ones and is was something I will remember forever and I’m sure the people in the boat not far from that scene will remember it for the rest of their lives too!
