If you find the Cape Kumukahi Light, as it’s labeled, be sure to not expect a true “lighthouse.” We made our way to the corner of 132 and 137, and then continued on down Kapoho Kumakahi Lighthouse Road expecting something great. It’s literally a light on top of a big white tower, no house, and not worth going to see. However, if you venture past this little misnomer of a landmark, you will be dazzled by the ancient volcanic rock that lies vacant before you, with the Pacific endlessly crashing against it. There are road paths that you can take, as long as you have a 4-wheel drive car, otherwise you’ll have to walk, as the changes in elevation along the “roads” are pretty severe. This little trip is worth the drive/walk, as you’ll be crawling all over old rocks with the waves dancing around you. We didn’t even explore all the trails, as they run along the coast for what seems miles. Considering this isn’t even mentioned as a place to go, and therefore, off the radar, I’d take the time and check it out. Just skip the “lighthouse.”
