Caminito del Rey

PRESA GAITANEJO, S/N, 29550, Málaga, Spain

Here’s one surefire way to get your adrenaline pumping: set out on this five-mile trek along boardwalks perched on the edge of stone cliffs more than 300 feet above the Rio Guadalhorce. These wooden boardwalks, which had become notorious for their disrepair, were refurbished in 2015. They only take up 1.8 miles of the total Caminito, whose path follows along the Gorge Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a majestic nature reserve in the Málaga Mountains between the towns of Alora, Antequera, and Ardales (if you get dizzy easily, think twice before looking down). A bus service takes hikers back to the starting point, in Ardales, where you can have a refreshing cerveza paired with gorgeous lake views at Restaurante El Mirador.
