At one end of Sacramento's historic center, Old Sacramento, is the California State Railroad Museum. The museum is great fun for both children and adults. Kids love playing with the tables of train sets and pressing the buttons to make model trains chug on the upper floor. During the holiday season, the museum installs a huge Christmas tree and other holiday-themed decorations. Kids and adults, especially those who love trains (like me), can learn about the history of train travel through touring the historic train cars. Each was built for a different purpose, from dining and sleeping to delivering mail.
Train rides on a historic open-air train are also available. They leave from the old depot along the river at the end of Old Sacramento and continue along the Sacramento River for a few miles.
The museum is open daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Parking is available in the neighboring parking lot.
