Route 66 through the Mojave Tour, September, 2017
In 2013 I took a road trip through the Mojave Desert on Route 66, accompanied by Jim Conkle, who could easily be called "Mr. Route 66." The idea was to get his knowledge of the road into a feature story I was writing for my magazine.
It turned out to be one of the best road trips I've ever taken. Jim, who has traveled the entirety of Route 66, Chicago to LA, more than 300 times, and has received honors for his preservation work from the Smithsonian magazine and the White House, knew just about everyone along the road. And he got more hugs in one day than I've ever seen anyone get in a week.
I learned a lot on that trip, but with my interests in non-traditional attractions along Route 66, I wound up introducing Jim to a few new places and people.
The end result was that we began planning to film a documentary series, The Real Route 66 (still seeking sponsors), and we've been doing filled to capacity presentations on Route 66 through the Mojave Desert ever since.
Now, we're leading a Route 66 Through the Mojave tour in September, 2017. It's going to be a road trip to remember. Jim, in his mid-70s, is losing his eyesight, so we're not sure how many more tours he'll be able to lead in the future. But we want to hit the road again, and you can join us.
