Viennese Coffeehouses

The identity of a Viennese intellectual was ultimately defined by the coffeehouse they would frequent. Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler and Hugo von Hoffmannsthal would all brood over their work and agitatedly exchange ideas with fellow thinkers at the Café Central or Café Sperl. Soak up the atmosphere of history and deep contemplation over a delicious Café Mélange, a Viennese specialty. Maybe treat yourself to a slice of cake or Strudl and watch the day go by. It is perfectly common for guests to sit and read for hours, maybe ordering only a cup of coffee and enjoying the dulled sound of stimulating conversation. Austria doesn’t actively try to continue its tradition of coffeehouses, young and old will always seek out these unique institutions, and so should you.

Cafe Central -- a great meeting place

This was once the hangout of many great philosophers, poets and leaders, such as Leo Trotsky, Arthur Schnitzler, Peter Altenberg and Sigmund Freud. Café Central opened in 1876 in what was once the Vienna stock exchange on the premises of the Palais Ferstel. It has an impressive interior with high walls and Renaissance columns, great food, and even more impressive cakes, located at Herrengasse 14, 1010 Wien

And nearby, the Burgtheater is considered the most important theater in the German-speaking world. The architecture alone is worth seeing and now is the time to see what might be happening on the Rathausplatz. They are located at Universitätsring 2, 1010 Vienna, Tel.: +43 1 514444140

Coffee and pastries at Café Central

Originally opened in 1876, Café Central is perhaps the most famous of Vienna's traditional coffeehouses. It once served as a popular meeting place for discussing literature and politics, and names like Freud and Trotsky are among the more notable visitors. Its grand architecture, fresh pastries, and, of course, coffee are not to be missed.

A sweet afternoon treat

Cafe Central is a must stop location in the heart of Vienna. The pastry selection is abundant and all the selections are delicious. The picture above is a Peanut Carmel Creme Brulee on a Chocolate Crust. Enough said!

Cafe Central is for cake lovers

I love cake. Especially delectable chocolate cake varieties. The architecture of the place is reminiscent of a grand time. I've been here twice and both times were crowded so the take away option is available to those that just want to try the fantastic seasonal cakes on display. I would imagine that dining here is a wonderful experience with the live pianist playing beautiful classical pieces. There's always a next time!
