The Smoky Mountains stands as the most visited national park in the U.S. with the Grand Canyon following close behind. With so many outdoor activities like tubing, kayaking, camping, hiking, backpacking, sightseeing, and biking, it’s difficult to choose what to do if you’re only there for a short visit. If you don’t have more than a day to explore, I think one of the best ways to get the most out of your visit may be to take a drive through the Cades Cove 11 mile Scenic Loop. Or even bike it like I did. Of course, if you have the time and energy, it’s well worth the effort. The visitors center has bike rentals for $6 per hr. Not only was the scenery incredible, but we saw so many deer and had a chance to watch a bear and her two cubs as they crossed the road.

A Quiet Cove to Yourself

I thought this place was the ultimate beauty with deer trotting through golden fields. Then, the mist which hung so lovely all morning shifted to reveal mountains towering high above—a jaw dropping sight. I don’t wonder why they chose to live here. Arrive early to bike or walk the one-way loop before car traffic picks up. This is a great time to observe wildlife such as deer, coyote and turkey.
