Cabrillo National Monument
This National Monument of California marks the spot where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the United States. At the end of each September, actors re-enact this historic landing as part of the Cabrillo Festival. If you don’t happen to be in San Diego then, don’t fret. There’s plenty to explore at the monument including the two-mile Bayside Trail through coastal sage habitat and tide pools. Cabrillo died in the Channel Islands not long after coming ashore in San Diego, but he’s forever immortalized in the monument’s limestone statue. From this point there’s a stunning 360-degree view of the City of San Diego, Pacific Ocean, Mexico and the mountains.
