An hour’s flight from Sydney, Byron Bay is famous for a warm climate, gorgeous beaches, and a location convenient for exploring the nearby World Heritage-listed rainforests. It also draws some of the world’s best musicians to the annual Byron Bay Bluesfest, taking place this year from March 24 to March 28. While it’s described as “Australia’s Premier Blue and Roots Music Festival,” the acts are more eclectic than that might lead you to believe. In 2016, for instance, D’Angelo, Kendrick Lamar, and The National join musicians like Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, and Jason Isbell. For five days, five venues host lineups of performances beginning in the afternoon and going late into the night; as many as eight different groups take the stage on some days. It’s one more reason to check out this corner of New South Wales, which will surprise and delight you.
