The ruins at Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are without a doubt the gem of southern Albania. They're set alongside a lake, and they boast a historic who’s who of civilizations that have left their mark: Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and others. The Greco-Roman amphitheater is well preserved and is once again hosting performances. A basilica is known for its fine mosaics and baptistery, while a museum is contained within the old Venetian fortress tower.
