Staying like Knights and Ladies at a 1000-Year-Old Castle
While traveling the Romantic Road in Southern Germany, to really get into the medieval experience, we stayed at Burg Castle Hotel in the town of Colmberg, only 30 minutes' drive from Rothenburg ODT. This castle is more than 1,000 years old. As soon as we walked in through a big iron gate with a tower, we couldn't help but feeling transformed back to the Middle Ages. They keep the interior and decor of the hotel dark and old (lots of taxidermied animals and heads), but they've updated the amenities in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Don't forget to look for the vending machine blending nicely with the wooden wall on the second floor. The hotel doesn't have a lift. Though we had to climb stairs to the 3rd (top) floor, we're glad there is no elevator to ruin the character of the building. Venturing out through the nooks and crannies of the castle is fun, especially onto the hotel grounds. The castle sits high up on the hill, so you get the view of Colmberg and the green rolling hills of Lower Franconia.
