The Buzz Around Brunswig Square In Little Tokyo
To say that Little Tokyo and the new Arts District are buzzing in downtown Los Angeles is an understatement; the revitalization of this area anchored by the expertly restored Brunswig Square project on Second Street has taken wing. Brunswig Square is a beautifully re-imagined building, the latest renovation revival and one of Jamestown, LP ‘s collection of iconic properties from Chelsea Market in NYC, Ponce City Market in Atlanta, and Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco. In keeping with the flavor of the neighborhood the tenants in Brunswig Square vary from traditional Japanese eateries to shared creative space think-tanks and cutting edge Japanese designer pop-up stores. And it all seems to work harmoniously. Try Ikkousha Ramen for dinner and Wolf & Crane for the perfect cocktail.

At the center of Little Tokyo, there are over 40 eateries, cafes and bars, museums and shopping all within walking distance. Across the street from Brunswig Square is the Japanese Village and Little Tokyo Mall for Japan-inspired gifts, cosmetics, bakery, art, food market and clothing. One block over on First Street stay at the relaxing Miyako Hotel Los Angeles, check out the old Bunkado gift shop, Fugetsudo sweet shop, or the Koyasan Temple. Lovers of old tools and handmade culinary knives will love Anzen Hardware.

At lunchtime head over to the Honda Plaza to Sushi Gen for terrific sashimi and sushi specials, and later a few doors down browse Rafu Bussan for smalls, Japan tableware and tea pots. For business stays the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles Downtown for business is nearby and do not miss the Japanese American National Museum. The Regional Connector Transit Project is under construction and will bring the ease of trail transportation to and from Little Tokyo and the Arts District to various other rail line destinations.

Two blocks from Brunswig Square is the Arts District with galleries artisan brews, restaurants and a cool vibe. In the Arts District you’ll find another beautifully re-purposed building which once was a flour mill now called Hauser + Wirth offering huge art exhibition spaces with world-class art installations. Here you’ll also find Manuela, an open-style restaurant with tender elk, seasonal American fare, wines and great libations served under the watchful eye of Chef Wes Whitsell. And that’s the buzz!
