Out of the way Surf Town
Bolinas, California is about an hour drive north of San Francisco, in Marin County. Locals tear down signs on Route 1 to prevent outsiders from finding the spot. I discovered it years ago, and have been going back ever since. This photo was taken on Brighton Beach, the town's main beach and where a lot of surfers go to play. If you're a tidepooler, drive to Agate beach, and walk south to Brighton during low tide. There are a houses available to rent near the beach, but if you're on a budget, contact Terry Donohue at 415.509.1740. She has a wonderful little cottage the can house up to 6 people for $200 a night, on Hourseshoe Hill Rd, a 5 minute drive from the beach and a short walk or bike ride. It's less windy then on the beach too!
