Breckenridge

Tucked in against Colorado’s Tenmile Mountain Range in the Arapaho National Forest, Breckenridge was founded during the gold rush of 1859—in fact, the largest gold nugget in the state, weighing more than 13 pounds, was discovered here in 1887. Today its well-preserved Victorian-era downtown is home to trendy shops and tasty eateries that occupy the colorful Victorian buildings in all seasons. In wintertime, the ski area sports 34 lifts, a free gondola, and nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain; in warmer months, the area is popular for fishing, hiking, and mountain biking.

Winter fun in Breckenridge Colorado

My family has met up in Breckenridge for years for skiing, shopping and other winter activities. One year I rented snowshoes and hiked around- which is when I took this photo.

Breckenridge is a great place for families and there are plenty of slopes for beginning and intermediate skiers. Oh, don't worry, there are some gnarly black diamonds as well.

The town of Breckenridge started out as a mining camp in the mid-1800's. Many of the shops and restaurants are in historic buildings. There definitely something for everyone here, but in a small town atmosphere. The shops are fun and there's a few gem and mineral stores I always visit. At one jewelry shop is where my husband and I purchased our wedding bands, silver engraved bands with trees and a moon/sun.

My sis and I love to go hang out at Burke and Riley's Irish Pub - http://burkeandrileyspub.com/home/index.php -in the downtown area. They have a fire pit on the patio with great views of the mountains that look beautiful on a moonlit night. It's a great place to hang out with the locals.

Outhouse Racin' at Breckenridge Kingdom Days

Want to make history fun? Head to the annual Outhouse Races in Breckenridge, Colo. The races are part of the town's annual heritage event, Kingdom Days, which celebrates the area's rich mining history.

Free museum tours, a community party (with a town photo), live music, and kids' activities take place during the festival, which typically coincides with the summer opening of the Breckenridge gondola and Summer Fun Park.
