Your arrival at placid Breaksea Sound may well be met by a pod of dolphins—the famously social sea mammals are plentiful in these waters. You might also spot the rare Fiordland crested penguin, with its distinctive yellow stripe above the eye. And keep your camera ready: There are plenty of photogenic waterfalls along the shores. The Bowen Channel and Acheron Passage connect Breaksea to Dusky Sound, and you’ll see the most waterfalls in the Bowen Channel’s Wet Jacket Arm, especially after heavy rains.
