It is perhaps not surprising that Milford Sound—with more than 200 days of rain each year—has an abundance of waterfalls. Only two of them, however, flow constantly (the rest appear briefly only after storms). The taller of the two cascades is located at the head of the fjord near the town of Milford Sound. Bowen Falls (often called Lady Bowen Falls) was named after Diamantina, the first wife of George Bowen, a 19th-century governor who presided over the end of the New Zealand wars between Maori and the New Zealand government. The falls are fed by the Bowen River and plunge from a height of 162 meters (531 feet).
