I feel like I found the only good bakery in Brussels, located in the “unofficial” Chinatown near the Ste. Catherine neighborhood. Boulangerie Charli had me drooling the first time I walked passed its display window, full of rustic sandwiches, attractive tartes and delicate pastries. This is primo French style baking—the only place in Brussels that I can say has a good crusty and authentic baguette. Charli's uses only organic flour for all its 12 loaves, with the oven going all day in plain view of the main dining room. The apple tarte, or Frou Frou, is a work of art with its apple slices spun into rose buds. The five different sandwiches (3-4 euros each) on offer are simple, yet delicious creations that sell out just after the lunch rush. My favorites: Salmon Arugula or the Brie and Apple on multi-grain. Seating is limited to a maximum of 20 or so, but after 2pm it’s a great place to stop for tea/coffee time.
