Botanical Garden

Founded in 1808 by Dom João VI, the king of Portugal, Rio’s 54-hectare (133-acre) botanical garden is one of the world’s finest. One can spend hours strolling through the gardens amid monkeys, turtles, toucans and butterflies and nearly 10,000 tropical plants. Lily ponds, a shady and glamorous alley of palm trees and a 600-species orchid collection are all features of this relaxing corner of the city.
