Pick up a good book at a classic Athens bookshop
If you’re in need of a good read, or just like bookstores and the smell of print, head to the university district (Metro stop: Panepestimiou) and visit Politeia (the State). Divided into four sub-stores, the shop has a great selection of fiction titles in English from writers across the globe (for fiction, head to the first shop — labelled A). You’ll also find English titles in other sections, but they’re mixed in with the Greek books so it might take some digging if you’re looking for a specific title though the staff is extremely helpful and speak English. If you’re at all hungry, make a point to stop by the unassuming souvlaki/gyro spot on the corner next door (To Prothorpion, at Asklipiou 1) and grab a table. In this writer’s view, it’s one of the best around. Besides the food, it’s a great people-watching spot.
