Children's book author Judy Blume and her husband, George, were among the cofounders of Books & Books, a nonprofit independent bookstore that shares space with the Studios of Key West. The art deco building that houses the arts organization once served as the Masonic Temple. Key West has a strong literary history: Authors like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, James Merrill, John Hersey, Robert Stone, Annie Dillard, and Ann Beattie all left their marks on the city. The store is an inviting place to linger and browse, with colorful rugs, round bar-level tables, and, of course, stacks of books for sale. There are also occasional author events held.
