It's a book lover's dream come true: Imagine an antiquarian bookstore filled with all manner of tomes chosen with care by an author himself. Now imagine that the author is Larry McMurtry, the man behind Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, and Terms of Endearment. That's Booked Up, McMurtry's own bookstore located in Archer City. The store houses between 150,000 to 200,000 fine and scholarly books, every single one bought and shelved by McMurtry himself. The author rarely haunts the stacks these days, but his spirit is imbued in every page. The store was pared down from its original 300,000 books and multiple locations at a much publicized auction in 2012, but the now singular shop—and McMurtry, Archer's most famous resident—continue on.
