Bolgar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Volga River in the Republic of Tatarstan. It contains remains of the medieval city of Bolgar, an early settlement of the Volga-Bolgars, a civilization that existed between the 7th and 15th centuries AD, and was the first capital of the Golden Horde in the 13th century. It is also a symbolic reminder of the acceptance of Islam by the Volga-Bolgars in 22AD and remains a sacred pilgrimage destination for Tatar Muslims.
