Boeung Keng Kang Market
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Sun - Sat 7am - 5pm
Breakfast in Phnom PenhMost people will steer you towards the Russian Market because it's easier to navigate for foreigners, but BKK is much more interesting. It's a typical Cambodian market where you can get your hair done, nails painted, have your bike repaired, buy produce and have a quick bowl of noodles for breakfast. It's also a fun place to go just to explore and people watch. People will stare, but pushy vendors are almost non-existent here.
Along the perimeter of the market you will find women selling stuffed "waffles", roasted bananas, and an assortment of other breakfast sweets. The highlight of the market are the cold noodle bowls though. Imagine Vietnamese Bun with fewer herbs, thicker noodles, and a splash of creamy coconut milk. The noodles are so popular here that they sell out fast and there is rarely an empty seat at any stall. Hover over someone who is already sitting at the counter and when they stand up, take their place. This is standard protocol, so don't feel uncomfortable. There aren't very many variations of this dish, so it's safe to order by pointing at what your neighbor is eating.
