Bluemont Vineyard

18755 Foggy Bottom Rd, Bluemont, VA 20135, USA

Back in 2005, brothers Mark and Bruce Zurschmiede planted grapes with the vision that it would become a significant winery, an extension of their family’s 200-acre Great Country Farms in Bluemont. In 2007, the brothers, along with best friends Bob and Kevin Rupy, opened Bluemont, offering a broad selection of pure Virginia wines. Top labels feature farm animals (paying tribute to the agricultural roots) such as The Goat, The Cow, The Pig, and The Ram. Make your way into the tasting room and observation deck to enjoy the wines, along with an assortment of gourmet cheeses, charcuterie, dips, oils, bread—or ask about their specials (only offered on Saturday and Sunday). At the same time, bask in this hella cool view of the Loudoun countryside from 951 feet above sea level on the slopes of the Blue Ridge. On a clear day, you’re able to see the top of the Washington Monument 60 miles to the east.

A Glimpse of D.C. Wine Country

When it comes to wine and viticulture, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Australia, and Napa immediately come to mind. But you can add Virginia, too. The wine business has taken off here with over 200 licensed wineries, especially in Loudoun and Ablemarle counties. It is now the fifth largest producer of wine in the U.S. A special thank you is in order, to two individuals who made it all possible—Thomas Jefferson and Dr. D.N. Norton. Yes, it was Jefferson’s fascination with fine wines during his European travels as ambassador to France that ushered a legacy for many growers and winemakers in the Commonwealth. Dr. Norton, a Richmond scientist, was able to combine grape seeds from native vines producing a very dark grape named “Norton,” after himself. A favorite among VA wine drinkers, it is disease-resistant and can withstand the seasonal changes.
