A Manhattan in Toronto

Cocktail Bar's Manhattan has been voted Hogtown's number one libation many a time. The booze-heavy tipple blends house-made bitters, Alberta Springs 10-year rye whiskey and the kicker, Carpano Antica Formula vermouth. Two dried cherries––bathed in rye, vermouth, caramel syrup and a house-made bitter almond tincture––are the finishing touch. A bit of a splurge at $16, this drink is undoubtedly worth every penny!

The Bar to Impress Her: Cocktail Bar

A great second date place. The drinks are strong and stiff; the lighting is low and the music is subdued. If you want other things to be strong and stiff later, this is your place. Ironically, the best Manhattans are in Toronto.

Excuse the address -- it's the white building across the street from The Black Hoof - also known as the holdover for the Black Hoof wait.

The Best and Most Unusual Food in Toronto: The Black Hoof

The Black Hoof gets a lot of press and for good reason. Their food and concept is different and simply one of the best. From the tongue on brioche, the bone marrow with chimichurri and foie gras with nutella on banana bread (yup...you heard that right! ), you'll be fuller faster than you can say "carnivore." Not as adventurous of an eater? They're known for their charcuterie and cheese boards. For the size, they're quite filling.
Get here early. It gets packed fast. No reservations. Cash and debit only.

Pictured: my snap of foie gras and nutella. Mmm!

Nose to Tail in Toronto

In the most unassuming location with an awning that simply states "Charcuterie" and no sign of their name emblazoned proudly, The Black Hoof is modest. The menu is upon the blackboard as you enter and the chefs cook with a four burner oven that I have seen in my childhood or at least my first apartment rental.

You would hardly even think that this narrow restaurant is one of the best meals in Toronto. It can also be the most controversial with horse carpaccio on the menu and bone marrow with the optional shot of paired alcohol to be poured down the hollowed out bones and into your watering mouth. This is no place to take grandma unless she loves a good time and isn't afraid of an oxtail here and a bit of foie on waffles there.

A great spot to take a date or to see the look on your sisters' face as you devour a salumi of my little pony and an awesome terrine of beef's heart. Maybe wait to tell her afterwards...

The Black Hoof's Newest Addition: Rhum Corner

This empire is always fresh of ideas so when proprietor Jen Agg's husband Roland Jean started having island-themed parties at Cocktail Bar, the idea was a concept to change their Raw Bar into Rhum Corner. Jean, who is of Haitian descent, has created a number of delicious dishes replicating the country's cuisine but done Black Hoof snack-style paired late night with your rum concoction. I am a big fan of the salt cod patties.

Of course, if you're a fan of rum in any style, you're in for a treat. Rum and cokes come in the pitcher; dark and stormys are a plenty and they even have pina colada and daiquiri slushies!

Paired with a relaxed setting and island music, it feels like you're on vacation here!

The Black Hoof

The best meal of my weekend in Toronto was at The Black Hoof. We started off with deliciously unique libations across the street from the restaurant at The Black Hoof's cocktail bar, and then shared quite a few of the tapas-style dishes. They were all excellent, from the house-cured prosciutto to the smoked sweetbreads to the absolutely addictive pork carnitas tacos. The Black Hoof is definitely a must when visiting Toronto!
