You'll probably get hungry at some point during your day on Gulangyu. The island is not known for being budget-friendly, but it is known for its ambiance, so you might as well seek out the best. The Black Cat Dining Room (黑猫餐厅) is tucked away in the heart of the island on quiet Yongchun Road. The majestic mansion it is housed in is the main star of this restaurant. In its first incarnation, the Black Cat hosted the US Navy's Great White Fleet when it anchored in Xiamen in 1908. The current building was built in 1920 and served as a raucous dancehall during that decade. It's decidedly more sedate today, with historical photographs and antiques decorating the private dining rooms. The menu features a mix of Western food (steaks, salads), seafood, and Chinese stir-fry dishes.
Open 10:30-21:30. 14 Yongchun Road on Gulangyu Island 鼓浪屿永春路14号
