The Bisti Badlands south of Farmington, NM, are an unsung gem in the American Southwest. But deep into the Badlands is a magical place known as the “Egg Factory.” It’s a two-mile hike with no discernible elevation gain from the parking lot. But to get there in time for sunrise, it requires the fortitude to get up early, a drive 30-40 minutes from Farmington, and faith in a good GPS since you can’t rely on landmarks to find your way in the dark. But it’s well worth the effort to watch the sun rise over this small area that highlights rock formations that look like alien eggs and petrified sea turtles. There is no landscape like it anywhere else.
