Cape Malay is a fusion of Indian, Malaysian, and a touch of other Southeast Asian cusine. It is an effect of the slaves from the 17th century. The food is often considered to be working class fare and it is a mixture of sweet and spicy.
Bishmillah in the Bo Kapp neighborhood has been serving Cape Mayla cusine for 30 odd years.
We ordered, bobotie (curried beef with egg custard), Kingkip curry and sosatie (a Mediterranean-style kebab marinated with Indian curry). Everything was really good but much on the sweet side. It was a curious culinary experience that does not involve eating insects or uncommon animal parts.
