Bird Island is famous, as the name suggests, as a natural habitat for a variety of local birds. Magellanic and imperial cormorants (otherwise known as rock shags and shags) are the dominant species, and their distinctive black-and-white coloring may momentarily convince you that you’re seeing penguins. The sight of them flying, of course, will convince you otherwise. Their flights above and then sudden dives into the subantarctic water make a memorable and—if you have the right camera equipment—highly photogenic occasion. Other birds to spot include petrels, skuas, steamer ducks, kelp gulls and grey gulls.
