The Wachau Valley is a wine and food lovers paradise. Many of the accommodations will have bikes to rent or know where to direct you for day rentals. Visit the valley in September and you can eat the most beautiful apricots, prunes and pears off the fruit trees along the bike paths and enjoy the fresh, semi-fermented grape juice called Sturm, which only is available a few weeks of the year. Be sure to taste the local mushrooms that are foraged by the townsmen. Don't miss the heurigers for local wine, meats and cheeses along the bike path and be sure to explore the quiet, medieval streets of Spitz. Past the church and up the hill in Spitz we discovered a tucked away heuriger with beautiful Gruner from 2005 which we enjoyed with a pot of foie gras and prunes. What could be better?
