Hiking Big Daddy
Rising before dawn on a cool desert morning and sweeping past the crowds at Dune 45, we reach the base of Big Daddy! It's deserted and our intrepid group makes our way up the spine of one of the area's largest dunes. Walking on the sand, barefoot, feels divine but it's hard work! It's not to be missed. The view from the top is staggering, all 360 degrees. After a rest and a visit from a desert lizard it's time to descend (we can spot the line of later arrivals starting their ascent)! The descent is exhilerating, leaping straight down the side of the dune. 325m (1066 feet) and very steep all the way into Deadvlei, the clay pan famous for it's dead acacia trees! A favorite life moment!
