A Gift for a Queen: Obidos, Portugal
Obidos is an extremely small and very well preserved town about an hour north of Lisbon (approximately 55 miles). It was first given to Queen Isabel by King D. Dinis in the 13th century as a wedding present, starting the tradition until the mid-1800s. There are always tourists here, but there are tons of places to take fantastic pictures. There are also a couple of shops/art galleries with primarily pottery and cork-made items that are worth visiting. When in Obidos be sure to have some Ginginha (sour cherry liqueur) and some chocolate. You can visit Obidos if you are staying in Lisbon, but you can also stay in this area for a couple of days and go to Peniche and Nazare for excellent fish! Beaches in this area are beautiful, with white sand and rough seas with clean dark blue water.
