Pronounced Bister, this isn’t really a village at all. Not in the real sense of the word. But it is an outlet shopping centre, on steroids, and is so popular it causes traffic jams on the A34 and seems to double in size every few years or so. And they’ve recently changed their name to Chic Outlet, just so you know this is a cut above the rest.
Consumerism is alive and well, especially if you are looking for a bargain on an Alexander McQueen frock or a Prada bag. When I say bargain, you could probably afford a month’s rent somewhere in the UK for the price of a pair of shoes. But that’s not the point.
It’s now the world’s most successful shopping destination. I know families from Hong Kong who fly specially over for a weekend. It’s a global destination, and as you wander down the ‘streets’ it’s like walking the corridors of the United Nations building. Chinese, Russians, Saudis, heads of states, royalty, actors and models have been seen scouring the shops for the 30%+ discounts.
With 130 outlets, it's a shopoholic's heaven. And if you can’t stop buying, you can always hire a personal shopper to do the heavy lifting for you (although I have seen quite a few people wheeling suitcases behind them to transport their loot).
