My December trip to Cambodia was memorable on many many levels because of the four day stay at Angkor Wat. While most of the visitors tend to concentrate their efforts on Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, I set a day aside to travel to the ruins of Beng Mealea - the effort was completely worth it. The temple ruins here are in a completely untouched state, with no reconstruction efforts to mar the landscape. The idea was to contrast the Angkor complex with what the temples looked like before they were put back together. It is a spectacular experience to scramble in and out of the ruins, climb the crumbling walls and jump from one dovecote to another. It is an altogether exhilarating look at man's ambition, passion and hubris, being brought down to earth inexorably by nature. Here you can see the soft light of the late afternoon warm the crumbling colonnades of the temple complex. A must-see, and the lack of tourists only adds to its charms.
