Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

This vast reef system—the second largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is home to a spectacular variety of rare corals and hundreds of protected species of marine life that attract divers and snorkelers from all over the world. The system is made up of seven protected areas that include sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries, and its most famous attraction is the Great Blue Hole, a 125-meter-deep (412-foot) submarine sinkhole in Lighthouse Reef that is 300 meters (980 feet) across.
