Montreal Bagels in Oakland's Temescal
The best bagel I have ever had is a Beauty's bagel, and I've had lots of bagels. Wood fire ovens in the back of the shop dish out Montreal style bagels that are first boiled in honey-water, and then fired in the oven. They are chewy, fresh, and you can load them up with traditional lox and capers, have them alongside shakshuka, or build a monstrous sandwich. My personal favorite is an open-face everything bagel with salted cucumbers, pickled onions, and sprouts. The coffee is fresh and roasted in nearby Santa Rosa, by Flying Goat. The chocolate chip cookies are to die for.

Located on the edge of Temescal, there is a hipster appeal, but it's not exclusively hipster clientele. Local rotating artwork hangs along one wall, while the others are decorated with plants and planters found in Temescal Alley. There's sidewalk seating and bar seating, in addition to single-party and community tables. I love coming here with a journal and a book on Sunday morning and watching the church folks walk by in their Sunday best.

Weekends are quite busy, so go on a weekday if you can, or get in early and fuel day of exploring the bay. They're conveniently located near the MacArthur BART Station.
