Wilderness, Just Minutes from Downtown Albuquerque
The City of Albuquerque preserves more than 28,000 acres as open space, including the lands that encompass Bear Canyon. Set in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains (which earn their name from the Spanish word for "watermelon," which describes the magenta hue they turn at sunset), Bear Canyon boasts several hiking and mountain biking paths across desert landscapes. The trails unfold into U.S. Forest Service-protected wilderness lands. The best part: this area can be reached within a 20-minute drive from the heart of the city.
