In the riverfront and beach town of Costa Nova near the city of Aveiro you will find the candy striped beach houses facing the river. The sight of these houses painted in vertical stripes of green, blue, yellow, or red with bright red geraniums in their window boxes makes me feel lighthearted and happy. Originally these striped huts were the fishermen’s cottages. As they left them, others bought them for family homes or vacation property. A beautiful bright blue Summer sky with the sun shining brightly and boats on the ria make it a perfect day. I hear the children laughing and playing on their way to the beach. The beach is wide and clean and is directly behind the houses. I am always reminded of my childhood vacation beach days as I see the tubes, pails, and beach chairs for sale in the shops along the street set amid the pastry shops, restaurants, and cafes. The promenade in front of the houses is a relaxing walk. I like to sit at one of the riverfront cafes and watch the doting grandparents sit with their grandchildren as they eat their ice creams as they wait for the dinner hour. Costa Nova is a great stop for a Summer ( or Fall or Spring). Enjoy the river and the beach and don’t miss the candy striped houses.
