Less than eight kilometers (five miles) from Omaha Beach is the historic town of Bayeux, with its medieval center, half-timbered houses and Norman-Gothic cathedral. The UNESCO-listed Bayeux Tapestry, housed in its own museum, depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 with some 50 scenes spanning 70 meters (230 feet) of embroidered cloth.
