Battle of Waterloo

Route du Lion 1815, 1420 Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium

The famous battle didn’t take place in Waterloo but in the area known as la Belle Alliance, which was quite an interesting name for the armies of the British, Dutch and Prussians that came together to defeat Napoleon. Field Marshall Blücher, the commander of the Prussian forces did suggest this name to the Duke of Wellington as an appropriate one for the name of the battle, but being an arrogant Brit, the Duke said that it would be named the Battle of Waterloo, since his HQ was located there. Waterloo is several miles from the battlefield. If you ever visit Brussels, you should also head down to Waterloo, um, I mean la Belle Alliance to learn about one of the most important battles in European history.
