Imagine a group of people standing around in an cavernous urban setting, erupting into cheers as individuals step up to the marker, lift their arms, aim, and heave an axe — yes, an axe — through the air. Somehow the Backyard Axe Throwing League, or BATL, has gone from niche sport to one of the most popular activities in Toronto today. And for good reason — it's a hell of a lot of fun.
I was a bit sceptical as a group of us stood in the chilly environs down in the industrial area off Cherry Street. As a horrible sportiste I wasn’t too keen on tossing an axe however, while terrifying at first, you soon get the hang of it and stop wincing each time you throw one. The staff was very patient with our group as we slowly but surely improved throughout the duration of the afternoon. (Don’t think this is a quick activity; it took us about three hours total.)
Oh, and did I mention you can sip on some brews while you’re at it? Really helps to loosen up the muscles which will without a doubt be aching come tomorrow.
